By 1838 a frame church and school were built where the Congregational Church now stands. In 1856 when the new- brick church was constructed, the 1838 church was moved.
The school was conducted in the 1838 church for about six years. A teacher from the East was hired, and even high school classes were conducted. High school classes were unusual at this time because the children of high school age were needed to help at home with the garden and farm work. Their library soon contained several hundred books. Work was started on the brick Seminary where the new city park is located. It was opened in 1844 and held classes for all grades through a year or two of high school. Some out of town students enrolled, and the school was a factor in attracting many families to move here. Cultural programs were often held. In later years old timers credited Geneseo's progress to the caliber of the pioneer families.
